Let Freedom Ring

3 Feb

The first Bible I ever received other than from my relatives was a red New Testament in the fifth grade. It was given by Gideons International. This is a group of individuals dedicated to spreading the Word of God anywhere and everywhere they can. If you see a Bible in a motel or hospital room, it was usually placed there by this organization.
I was excited to receive this. I had seen Bibles before but for some reason, this was special to me. I remember sitting at my desk and opening up to find the following verse inscribed on the front page underneath a drawing of the American flag.
“Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people (Proverbs 14:34)”.
This verse has stuck in my mind ever since. I have memorized many a scripture since that day but this was one of the first I ever committed to memory.
Like every other verse in the Word of God, it rings true.
I have long been proud to be an American. This is a nation founded by Christian men on the motto “In God We Trust”. This is a nation that recognized that it needed God to succeed.
For the longest time, this nation clung to that knowledge. We prayed at schooltime. We were open and vocal about our faith. We were not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
That’s all changed now.
Now, we are subject to a lawsuit if we pray in school. We are subject to government prosecution if we are too open about our faith. We dare not speak out against sin for fear that it might be perceived by others as “imposing our morality on them.”
Why has this changed? Those who advocate such changes remind us that this is a free country and that we cannot impose our religion on others.
But I think their definition of freedom is warped.
What is freedom? It is not the absence of responsibility. It is not the total right to act in any way we choose and not suffer natural or logical consequences.
Then what is freedom?
I hearken back to God’s word.
“You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free (John 8:32).”
“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life…(John 14:6)”.
The Truth is Jesus Christ.
And only in a relationship with Him can true freedom be found.
Only when a nation looks to Him can it be truly free.
And only when we look to Him as Americans are we truly exalted.
Let Freedom Ring!
